Measuring What Matters: How Schools and Trusts Can Truly Evidence Provision Impact

Schools and trusts invest significant time, care and resource in provisions, but activity alone is not evidence of impact. Explore how prior, during and post-provision analysis, meaningful benchmarking and longer-term monitoring can create a stronger understanding of change.

Schools and trusts run dozens of provisions every year, often at significant cost and with the very best intentions. Mentoring programmes, behaviour support, attendance initiatives, pastoral provisions and academic catch-up all play a vital role in supporting young people. Yet one question still comes up time and time again: how do we know this is really working?

In an environment of increasing accountability, tighter budgets and greater scrutiny around impact, intuition and anecdotal success stories are no longer enough on their own. Leaders need clear, credible evidence that the support they are putting in place is genuinely improving outcomes for pupils.

At Purple, our focus is on helping schools and multi-academy trusts move beyond surface-level reporting and towards confident, evidence-based insight.

Moving from activity to impact

Many systems can tell you what support a student is receiving. Far fewer can show how that support is changing outcomes over time. Purple uses advanced statistical analysis to evaluate impact before, during and after a provision.

By setting clear start and end dates, schools can move away from single snapshots and instead understand trends across time.

  • What attendance, behaviour or achievement looked like before a provision began

  • How those measures shifted during the provision

  • Whether improvements were sustained once the provision ended

Fair benchmarking that reflects real context

One of the biggest challenges in impact analysis is comparison. Raw numbers rarely tell the full story. Purple benchmarks students against their true cohort, taking into account factors such as year group, gender, Pupil Premium status and SEN.

Rather than asking whether a student has high behaviour points or low attendance, Purple shows how that student compares to peers with similar characteristics. This helps schools understand whether a provision is genuinely shifting outcomes, rather than simply reflecting underlying need.

Attendance-adjusted analysis

Attendance can significantly distort impact data. A student attending one day a week may appear to have fewer behaviour incidents than a full-time peer, despite a much higher rate of concern.

Purple addresses this by adjusting for attendance and treating every student as if they were attending at 100%. Behaviour, achievement and suspension data is scaled accordingly, helping prevent false reassurance when evaluating provisions.

Trust-wide insight for multi-academy trusts

Purple gives trust leaders visibility beyond individual schools. Trusts can see the impact of provisions across all schools, identify attendance and behaviour trends, compare approaches, share best practice and understand where resource is having the greatest effect.

Turning data into confidence

Measuring impact is not about producing reports for compliance. It is about giving leaders confidence that the right support is reaching the right pupils at the right time. Purple exists to make provision impact clearer, fairer and easier to evidence, helping schools and trusts focus on improving outcomes for young people.
